Imran's Literacy Learning Story - 31.3.15

Learner: Imran    Learning Coach: Tracey Dillner           Date: 31.3.15
Learning Area: Literacy
Learning Observed
Imran is a very keen participant during Literacy sessions and this particular lesson was no exception. He always shares his ideas with justified ideas and enthusiasm. During the previous week we had been looking at how we can 'stretch sentences' - making them longer and more complex by adding relevant details. For the task we were practising writing a summary of a short story with the purpose of encouraging other people to read it. After we had created one together as a group, Imran made a very logical point by saying "I we want other people to read it, the we shouldn't say what happens at the end". From this I issued him a challenge to craft a summary that hooked people in, but didn't give the plot away too much. He was very excited to go and try this independently. Below is a screenshot of his summary using the Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then template.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
As mentioned above, Imran is a keen contributor to discussions during Literacy. He is often excited to participate and can connect content from a text to other experiences he has had or prior knowledge (Thinking and Participating & Contributing). Imran shows curiosity during these discussions by sharing 'Did you know...' type statements or asking questions to clarify his thinking about a particular aspect e.g. "Is it sort of like...?" or "So, what you mean is...?" (Relating to Others).
Next Learning Steps
  • Encourage others to share their ideas in a group situation - Imran can be very confident when he knows an answer and it would be good to see him build others up to do the same.
  • Ensure his writing/reading responses have correct punctuation with out overuse of things like question marks.
