Today I saw a balloon was floating above the carpet stuck on to the side of my sofa. It was really amazing to see something floating in midair even though it was filled with CO2. So I was curious about static electricity. Then we read about it and saw a video. This is what I learned.
Static electricity is a electrical charge that forms when negatively charged and positively charged objects rub against each other. For example: when you rub your feet on the carpet and then touch a metal door knob then you get a static electricity shock because the charge from the carpet travels to the door knob which is negative through your hands. Another example is when you get a balloon and rub it against your hair it builds up static charge and your hair stands up straight because it is attracted to the balloon and also each hair is positively charged and is repelling each other. Lightening is a powerful form of static electricity.
