Learning Observed

Earlier in the Year, the LH6 learners were learning about the design process called ‘LAUNCH’.  In a team, they were given the challenge of designing a roller coaster while following through the steps to observe, question, design, plan, create and test.

Hannah and Imran were initially part of the GEG team, but quickly joined in with this challenge when they returned.  Amin, Humaan, Kim and Yamen had already had time to share their ideas about roller coasters and had come up with questions about either the design or features of a roller coaster; forming a survey to then carry out with other learners in LH6.  The results from the survey were illustrated on a bar graph, analysed and used to help draft up the design (Level 3 AO, Statistical investigation).

The favourite part in the design process for these learners was creating the prototype and testing phase.  The group discussed the materials that they could bring from home (managing self) and they collaborated to build their prototype.  Their design changed a little from the plan due to the materials that they had chosen to work with and the level of difficulty in their design.

After two creating sessions, The group were asked to present their roller coaster for the final check - to check if the marble had enough momentum to move from start to finish. Their design  had problems with keeping the marble on the ‘tracks’.   It was #oresome to see the group work together to try and solve these problems.
Evidence of Learning

Kim is working out how to make a loop for their roller coaster.

The group recorded all their ideas about roller coasters on a web:

Survey results were displayed on a bar graph:

Sketches were made of the desired roller coaster and these were used as a guide during the construction of the prototype:

Amin and Humaam discussing their actions at the beginning of making their prototype:

The team work collaboratively to tape the roller coaster parts together:

Mrs Pearson was impressed with the group’s design.  Can you spy the right angles in the design?

The prototype is tested to see what works and what needs to be recrafted:

Next Learning Steps

  • Use ‘design thinking’ in another iExplore to develop a greater understanding of each part of the process
  • When working within a group, arrange times to meet and discuss where everyone is at and is everyone contributing in some way
  • Share learning at home and identify how design thinking is used in our everyday lives

Mexico

Today in I Experience we were learning about cultures. There were three options Greece, Scotland and Mexico. I chose Mexico with Miss Love as my learning coach and we learned that there were there people called the Astecs and they were very religious people and they gave a lot of human sacrifices to their gods. Then one day a Spanish conquistador wiped out the Astecs and that's why the speak Spanish in Mexico.

Now when ever some body ask questions a bout Mexico then I'll be the expert. I really liked the work shop because it was a new topic and it was very fascinating to learn about Mexico's culture. We also used a art technique called tooling.

I'm very excited to share my new learning with my family and  friends. I really liked how they chose interesting topics and how they had great time. Over all I think that it's a amazing I Experience and I'm looking forward to the next ones

The Science Road Show!

What: I went to the Science Road Show! The Science Road Show is a fair that's all about science and, fun. When we went inside it was really cool and there were a lot of activities. One of them was the hovercraft. It was really cool and you got to ride the actual hovercraft, and there was a man who did the elephant toothpaste experiment. There were two hosts, and they explained how dry ice turns straight away in to a gas.

So What: what I learned from the event?!? I learned that there is a process for when there is a liquid and if you freeze it it will become a solid (ice) and if you heat up the liquid it becomes vapour. There is also another experiment which is when you have salt water and you put it in the the Suns heat it will make vapour and then you will have salt crystals left in the container that you put it in.

Now What: How I could use my prior knowledge and my new knowledge to make connections. I already know that how to make elephant toothpaste, and how to make salt but I didn't know how dry ice instantly turns into a gas instead of becoming to a liquid then a gas. So all these thing I learned I could use in my I Explore or for my future.

To, Too & Two!?!

HOMOPHONES! Today we learned about homophones. Homophones are basically words that sound the same but are spelt differently ,e.g., there, their & they're & two, too & two. So we had to do a activity about homophones and it was easy because I already know what homophones are and what they mean ,e.g., they're ( they & are) , their ( It's their car ), there ( the cat is over there. )

It was very fun because we got to go in groups and we would have to all write down a sentence that includes on of the homophones and then there was a picture and you would have to guess what homophone is the correct mach for the image. There was a Dolphin and I wrote down that there is a Dolphin in the sea. So today was really cool and I had a lot of fun in the workshop!

NYLD! (National Young Leaders Day)

Today the year sixes went to the NYLD trip and is was really amazing! At first, we had to go on the bus to the Vodafone Event Center, and it was jam packed with cars, students & buses. After we had come inside the massive building, we headed to our seats for the day. The show had started and There was a DJ playing music and then the hosts came and told us about what happens in NYLD. So it basically is we learn about leadership and listen to other people's stories, that could inspire us to do more and help others. This year's topic was "You're a seed born with greatness"

And the first speaker was Aaron Jackson and how he would never give up and always try his best. Then it was Daniel Flynn, and he told us about how he saw an add about people not drinking clean water and that made him think if he could start a bottle water company so that every purchase funds to make new clean water pumps and then people won't have to drink dirty and dangerous water. So it was stories and events that happened in people's lives that have changed so many others lives and brought a smile on their face.

So over all at the end we had a wonderful and great experience and I'm sure that this made people think about that their a seed born with greatness. I learned a lot from today's trip and I'm hoping that this would inspire me to do more.

Amazing koru Art

For the past few weeks the habitat has been doing Maori related art. So we split up in to groups and I went to Miss Loves group and we did koru art inspired by Raewn Harris!

I have finished mine and I think it looks great. I'm really happy with my blending and my vibrant colours. I think personally that Raewn Harris is amazing at art! Especially the way she uses the natural New Zealand colours, and the Autumn colours, like orange, red and yellow.

I think I could have done a bit better while doing the rain drops. Because I used chalk and it smudged and it was really frustrating:(

For my art work I give my self personally 9/10. Because I'm really happy with my koru!

Freak shakes!

In our habitat we have been designing our own freak shakes. If your wondering about what it is, it's basically you design a crazy milk shake and there are other sweets and other stuff! So basically the killa cafe made a contest were if you design one about you summer holiday and if it's that good they might even put it in the menu, and you'll win a voucher for two shakes. I'm really looking forward to this and see who's gonna win!
