Imran is amidst his very interesting iExplore learning adventure about how to make robots. Imran has enjoyed prototyping simple robots with various materials and making changes to improve them demonstrating curiosity and resilience. He has also fostered the curiosity of other learners. It has been great to observe him making connections to his iExplore while he participated in some ‘discovery learning’ where they had some choices of tasks to complete to help them get familiar with the coding programme ‘Scratch’ and the extension kit ‘Makey Makey’ . He also made connections to their prior knowledge. Through watching tutorials, trialling his predictions and playing around with the various affordances of the equipment and programme he is self-directing his own learning. Watching Imran’s passion and commitment is fantastic and he has pride when showing his classmates. He is still making changes and has diverted slightly to making a powered boat which is wonderful. He has worked collaboratively to design and create an animation using Scratch code and Makey Makey and he is transferring his new capability to his iExplore. He has showed his curiosity, thinking and managing self skills by looking at what others had done and making connections to what he wants to achieve. I am looking forward to seeing how his learning progresses and how he can teach others his new learning.

Scratch & Makey Makey Learning Story - September 2015

For the past few weeks the learners have been engaged in an innovation station! The learners were given the choice of 4 provocations which included: creating an Ormibot from scratch, designing an object in Tinkercad to print in the 3D printer, designing a Science experiment or designing a series of code using Scratch and Makey Makey each of which would develop their capabilities. Arnav & Imran and Humaam & Aryan worked as pairs in a foursome in order to share a Makey makey set- such #oresome collaboration! The boys enjoyed the first week of ‘discovery learning’ where they had some choices of tasks to complete to help them get familiar with the coding programme ‘Scratch’ and the extension kit ‘Makey Makey’ and make connections to their prior knowledge. They watched tutorials, tried out their predictions and played around with the various affordances of the equipment and programme, self directing their learning from the presentation. They used the Makey Makey and Scratch to create a game console and a simple musical instrument successfully. For Week 9 and 10 the boys worked collaboratively to design and create an animation using Makey Makey and Scratch programme. In order to piece together the code successfully there was a lot of trialling and prototyping which showed the tenacity and resilience of all boys. They showed their curiosity, thinking and managing self skills by looking at what others had done and making connections to what they wanted to achieve. See their learning below.

My trip to Dubai
My trip to Dubai
At 6:am in the morning I woke up with a smile on my face because me & my family were going to Dubai. When we got things sorted we went to the airport and boarded our flight. It took a long time to board. It felt like one hour. Finally we could board. In the plane it was #Oresome. I drank 1 Fanta & 2 Sprites. When we arrived in Dubai I saw the Burj Al Khalifa the worlds tallest building. We went inside and I saw golden statues of the Burj Al Khalifa being sold. It was pretty cool. Next we went to Wild Wadi water park. I went on this ride called the drop it had a loop in it. It was crazy #Oresome. We kept on doing fun stuff but soon we had to head back to the airport. I had a #Oresome week! :)
